Edmonton Church, History

During the past couple of decades many Syro-Malankara Faithful migrated to Edmonton and they received the wholehearted support and assistance from the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton. The Syro-Malankara Catholic community in Edmonton is grateful to the Archdiocese for the same. The members of the community are committed to safeguarding the valued traditions of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and in passing the same to our future generation.

As a result of the continuous efforts and wishes of all Malankarites, on Feb 10, 2010, we decided to have a prayer group and biweekly prayer meetings are conducted at the residence of one of these families. Holy Mass was celebrated occasionally when a Malankara priest was available.

The presence of Rev. Fr. John Kuriakose, vicar of the Syro-Malankara Catholic community in Toronto, was a driving force in the formation of the community in Edmonton in 2009-2010. During the visit of Rev. Fr. John Kuriakose on April 28, 2010, we celebrated the Holy Mass in Santa Maria Italian Church. On this occasion, with the guidance of Fr. John Kuriakose, we formed an executive committee and elected Mr. Thomas Cherian as trustee, Mr. Saji Varghese as secretary, Maju Sebastian as treasurer & Mrs. Priya Sebastian as woman nominee. Mr. Johnson Kuruvilla, Mr. Varghese John and Mr. Deepak Chackalamuriyil were nominated as other committee members to lead this new mission in Edmonton.

His Grace Abraham Mar Julios, the Bishop of Muvattupuzha Diocese visited the Syro-Malankara Catholic community in Edmonton along with Fr. John Kuriakose on June 30, 2010. We gathered together along with our well-wishers and celebrated a Holy Mass in the Syro-Malankara rite in St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church. During this visit, His Excellency could also meet the Archbishop of Edmonton, H.E. Richard W. Smith.

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI erected a new Exarchate in USA and appointed His Excellency the Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Eusebius as its first Bishop and the Apostolic Visitator to Canada and Europe. His Excellency visited the Syro-Malankara Catholic community in Edmonton in January 2011 and celebrated a Holy Mass for them. He also visited the Archbishop of Edmonton, His Grace Richard W. Smith, and requested him to appoint a Malankara Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Edmonton who could also cater to the pastoral needs of the Syro-Malankara Catholics in the Archdiocese. Consequently, the Archbishop of Edmonton was very kind enough to appoint Rev. Fr. Thomas Puthupparampil as our coordinator.

On April 28, 2011, His Excellency Dr. Thomas Mar Eusebius visited Edmonton and celebrated Holy Mass in St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church. During the auspicious Eucharist, the bishop officially read the letter of Archbishop Richard W. Smith appointing Fr. Thomas Puthupparampil as the coordinator for the Malankara faithful in Edmonton.

The regular Holy Mass in the Syro-Malankara Catholic rite is every first Sunday of the month at 3:30 pm at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church, Millwoods, Edmonton. Every third Saturday, there is a prayer meeting at the residence of one of the Malankarites at 6:00 pm.
