Lk 10:1-16

The Mission of the Seventy-two.* 1After this the Lord appointed seventy[-two]* others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.a 2He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.b 3Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.c 4* Carry no money bag,d no sack, no sandals;e and greet no one along the way. 5Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’* 6If a peaceful person* lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.f 8Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,g 9cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’h 10Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say,i 11‘The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.’ Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.j 12I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town.k

Reproaches to Unrepentant Towns.* 13l “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!m For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15* n And as for you, Capernaum, ‘Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.’ 16Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”o

Dt 33:23-29

23Of Naphtali he said:

Naphtali, abounding with favor,

filled with the blessing of the LORD,

take possession of the west and south.r

24Of Asher he said:s

Most blessed* of sons be Asher!

May he be the favorite among his brothers,

and may he dip his foot in oil!

25May the bolts of your gates be iron and bronze;

may your strength endure through all your days!

26There is none like the God of Jeshurun,

who rides the heavens in his power,

who rides the clouds in his majesty;t

27The God of old is a refuge;

a support are the arms of the Everlasting.

He drove the enemy out of your way

and he said, “Destroy!”u

28Israel abides securely,

Jacob dwells apart,

In a land of grain and wine,

where the heavens drip with dew.v

29Happy are you, Israel! Who is like you,

a people delivered by the LORD,

Your help and shield,

and the sword of your glory.

Your enemies cringe before you;

you stride upon their backs.w

Jos 6:14-18

14On this second day they again marched around the city once before returning to camp; and for six days in all they did the same.

15On the seventh day, beginning at daybreak, they marched around the city seven times in the same manner; on that day only did they march around the city seven times. 16The seventh time around, the priests blew the horns and Joshua said to the people, “Now shout, for the LORD has given you the city. 17b The city and everything in it is under the ban. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are in the house with her are to live, because she hid the messengers we sent. 18c But be careful not to covet or take anything that is under the ban;* otherwise you will bring upon the camp of Israel this ban and the misery of it.

Ps 15:1-5

1aA psalm of David.

LORD, who may abide in your tent?*

Who may dwell on your holy mountain?*

2Whoever walks without blame,b

doing what is right,

speaking truth from the heart;

3Who does not slander with his tongue,

does no harm to a friend,

never defames a neighbor;

4Who disdains the wicked,

but honors those who fear the LORD;

Who keeps an oath despite the cost,

5lends no money at interest,*

accepts no bribe against the innocent.c

Whoever acts like this

shall never be shaken.

Is 65:8-12

8* Thus says the LORD:

As when the juice is pressed from a cluster,

and someone says, “Do not destroy it,

for there is still good in it,”

So will I do for the sake of my servants:

I will not destroy them all.

9From Jacob I will bring forth offspring,

from Judah, those who are to possess my mountains;

My chosen ones shall possess the land,

my servants shall dwell there.

10Sharon shall become a pasture for the flocks,

the Valley of Achor a resting place for the cattle,

for my people who have sought me.c

11But you who forsake the LORD,

who forget my holy mountain,

Who spread a table for Fortune

and fill cups of mixed wine for Destiny,*

12You I will destine for the sword;

you shall all bow down for slaughter;

Because I called and you did not answer,

I spoke and you did not listen,

But did what is evil in my sight

and things I do not delight in, you chose,d

Acts 6:1-7

The Need for Assistants. 1* At that time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.a 2* So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.* 3Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, 4whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6b They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.* 7The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.c

1 Cor 10:14-22

Warning Against Idolatry.* 14Therefore, my beloved, avoid idolatry.k 15I am speaking as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I am saying. 16The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?l 17Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.m

18Look at Israel according to the flesh; are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?n 19So what am I saying? That meat sacrificed to idols is anything? Or that an idol is anything? 20No, I mean that what they sacrifice, [they sacrifice] to demons,* not to God, and I do not want you to become participants with demons.o 21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and also the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons.p 22Or are we provoking the Lord to jealous anger? Are we stronger than he?q

Lk 10:17-20

Return of the Seventy-two. 17The seventy[-two] returned rejoicing, and said, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” 18Jesus said, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning* from the sky.p 19Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you.q 20Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”r
