Special Significance:
Transfiguration of Our Lord (M'thala)
Anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Geevarghese Mar Timotheos (1988)

Mt 17:1-8

The Transfiguration of Jesus.* 1a After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.* 2* b And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. 3* And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. 4Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents* here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5c While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,* then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6* When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. 7But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” 8And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone.

Ex 19:24-20:6

24So the LORD said to him: Go down and come up along with Aaron. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD; else he will break out against them.” 25So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

The Ten Commandments.* 1Then God spoke all these words:

2a I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt,b out of the house of slavery. 3You shall not have other gods beside me.* 4You shall not make for yourself an idolc or a likeness of anything* in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; 5you shall not bow down before them or serve them.d For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their ancestors’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation*; 6but showing love down to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Deut 16:13-17

You shall celebrate the feast of Booths for seven days, when you have gathered in the produce from your threshing floor and wine press. You shall rejoice at your feast, together with your son and daughter, your male and female slave, and also the Levite, the resident alien, the orphan and the widow within your gates. For seven days you shall celebrate this feast for the LORD, your God, in the place which the LORD will choose; since the LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your crops and in all your undertakings, you will be full of joy.

Three times a year, then, all your males shall appear before the LORD, your God, in the place which he will choose: at the feast of Unleavened Bread, at the feast of Weeks, and at the feast of Booths. They shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed, but each with his own gift, in proportion to the blessing which the LORD, your God, has given to you.

Ps 24:1-10

1A psalm of David.

The earth is the LORD’s and all it holds,a

the world and those who dwell in it.

2For he founded it on the seas,

established it over the rivers.b

3Who may go up the mountain of the LORD?c

Who can stand in his holy place?

4*“The clean of hand and pure of heart,

who has not given his soul to useless things,

what is vain.

5He will receive blessings from the LORD,

and justice from his saving God.

6Such is the generation that seeks him,

that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.”

7Lift up your heads, O gates;*

be lifted, you ancient portals,

that the king of glory may enter.d

8Who is this king of glory?

The LORD, strong and mighty,

the LORD, mighty in war.

9Lift up your heads, O gates;

rise up, you ancient portals,

that the king of glory may enter.

10Who is this king of glory?

The LORD of hosts, he is the king of glory.

2 Pet 1:16-21

We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.

Rom 11:25-36

God’s Irrevocable Call.* 25I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not become wise [in] your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in,s 26and thus all Israel will be saved,t as it is written:u

“The deliverer will come out of Zion,

he will turn away godlessness from Jacob;

27and this is my covenant with them

when I take away their sins.”v

28In respect to the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but in respect to election, they are beloved because of the patriarchs.w 29For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.x

Triumph of God’s Mercy. 30* Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, 31so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may [now] receive mercy. 32For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.y

33* Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!z

34“For who has known the mind of the Lord*

or who has been his counselor?”a

35* “Or who has given him anythingb

that he may be repaid?”

36For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.c

Lk 9:28-36

The Transfiguration of Jesus.* 28q About eight days after he said this, he took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray.* 29While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. 30And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,* 31* r who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. 32Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory* and the two men standing with him.s 33As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents,* one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying. 34* While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. 35* t Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” 36After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time* tell anyone what they had seen.
